The song uses samples from Latin masses (specifically, Neil Tennant reciting a part of the Confiteor, and other sounds recorded at locations such as Westminster Cathedral) and religious imagery. Music video for It's a sin shows Tennant under arrest by an inquisition with Chris Lowe as his jailer and Ron Moody in the role of his judge, interspersed with clips of personifications of the seven deadly sins: greed, pride, envy, lust, wrath, gluttony and sloth.

It is notable for the use of sampled voices and mechanical sounds associated with cycling that were used to supplement a simple electro-percussion pattern – an approach Kraftwerk have used on earlier tracks from albums "Trans-Europe Express" and "Computer World". A completely new recording was made for the 2003 album Tour de France Soundtracks, based on the original 1983 arrangement. The album was recorded for the 100th anniversary of the first Tour de France bicycle race.
